Schoolboy Beaten For Sharing the Gospel

Abel and his mother live in Calcutta, India. They are believers who serve the Lord wholeheartedly and they are always encouraged by His faithfulness to care for their needs. Abel’s mother found Jesus first. She was a passionate Hindu and taught her son her strong beliefs. Then one day, she met a church planter who told her about Jesus and His promises. She gave her life to Christ and turned from Hinduism to serve the one true God. Abel followed in his mother’s footsteps and gave his heart to the Lord, as well. Together they remained faithful witnesses for Christ, though it isn’t always that easy. India has a long history of persecution against Christians that continues today. Many believers suffer through difficult trials for their faith. Recently Abel was speaking to one of his classmates about God’s goodness, and why he and his mother are now at peace. He handed out evangelistic tracts that explained the Gospel, which his friends eagerly accepted. They also were excited about Abel’s faith and newfound contentment. While Abel shared with a growing crowd of children, his teacher walked over to listen. At the mention of the name Jesus, the man interrupted and strictly forbid him to continue. He told him that he must chant the name of the goddess Durga. Of course, Abel refused, and when his teacher demanded that he denounce Christ, Abel replied that he could never do such a thing. His boldness enraged his teacher who proceeded to beat Abel with a cane in front of his classmates. The teacher kept insisting that Jesus be denounced, and he did not stop with his abuse for several minutes. Abel’s back was black and blue, but he did not deny his Savior. He testified to a watching crowd that Jesus was Lord, the one true God.

In Matthew 5:14 – 16, Jesus tells us: You are the light of the world, a city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Abel may only be a child, but he understands the necessity of sharing with others God’s goodness, and his love for Jesus will never be hidden.

His boldness enraged his teacher who proceeded to beat Abel with a cane in front of his classmates.
