Loving Deeds Builds a Church
A Church Rises on the Shores of Lake Shala
Lake Shala, a picturesque and peaceful lake in South Central Ethiopia, lies in the heart of the Great Rift Valley. It was here that Simon, a young church planter, answered the Lord’s call to establish a church. With a deep passion for seeing lives transformed by Christ, he quickly immersed himself in the community.
One day, when a house fire broke out, Simon didn’t hesitate. He ran back and forth with water, helping to extinguish the flames. But his efforts didn’t stop there. After the fire was out, Simon took the initiative to raise funds so the family could rebuild their home. When asked why he cared so deeply and did so much, he boldly proclaimed the name of Jesus. He shared how the Lord had changed his own life and expressed his desire for others to experience the same transformational power.
The first man to hear Simon’s testimony gave his life to Christ. In a remarkable act of generosity, he donated half of his land — an 800 by 400-meter plot — to help build a simple church at the south end of Lake Shala. This church has since become a beacon of hope, drawing in those in need and offering the Truth of the Gospel.
As 1 John 3:17 – 18 reminds us:
“But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and Truth.”
Simon’s servant heart has left a lasting impact on the people of Lake Shala. When we serve the Lord wholeheartedly and give generously, He can work powerfully in and through us.
